Megnolia is the Meghalaya Natural Organic Farming Society for Livelihood Innovation in Agriculture, leading the shift to certified organic farming and sustainable livelihoods in the state.
Organic farming is a method of cultivation that avoids the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and synthetic inputs. At MEGNOLIA, it means working in harmony with Meghalaya’s natural ecosystem by using traditional practices, bio-fertilizers, and natural pest control. This approach not only keeps the soil healthy and the environment sustainable but also ensures that the crops we bring to you like Lakadong turmeric, ginger, and other local produce are pure, safe, and rich in natural goodness.
The National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), managed by APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce & Industries, oversees certification and ensures international recognition of Indian organic products.
Meghalaya’s climate supports a wide range of fruits including pineapple, mandarin orange, banana, citrus, pear, peach, and plum. Indigenous varieties like sohphie, sohiong, sohshang, sohphlang, and sohphoh khasi are also unique to the State. Pineapple, especially the Giant Kew and Queen varieties, is the most prominent crop, while fruits like guava, mango, litchi, jackfruit, and strawberry have high potential for commercial cultivation.
Meghalaya grows a wide variety of vegetables year-round, thanks to its diverse agro-climatic conditions. Sub-tropical crops include cucumber, pumpkin, beans, brinjal, and leafy greens, while temperate crops include cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, peas, radish, carrot, and beetroot. Indigenous vegetables like tree tomato and squash are also unique to the State. Tomato cultivation is particularly notable in the Umsning–Nongpoh belt and higher regions of East Khasi Hills, with offseason harvests fetching premium prices. The State is also promoting polyhouse farming to boost productivity and meet rising demand.
